The performance drivers of family firms have spawned considerable research interest. Almost exclusively this research has relied on independent sets of explanatory variables in linear analyses. These analyses mask the complex interdependencies that are likely to exist among key success factors, leading to faulty theory and misspecified implications for practice. As treatment, the authors propose a configuration approach to family firm performance that accounts for complex interdependencies among entrepreneurial, innovation and family influence conditions. Using a fuzzy set qualitative comparative analysis of a sample of 129 Finnish family firms, the authors identify sufficient conditions with regard to the existence or absence of antecedent conditions to family firm performance. These conditions include entrepreneurial orientation, exploration and exploitation activities that form causal paths towards family firm performance. To enrich the analysis, the authors theorize and empirically analyse how these conditions might differ in family firms with high and low levels of family influence. They deepen the current understanding of configurations that promote the performance of family firms, offer important implications for theory and practice, and set new directions for future research on the strategic management of family firms. The results are also virtually identical and insensitive to change across subjective and objective performance measures.

This study draws on the resource-based, dynamic capabilities, and organization learning theories to investigate the internal mechanisms through which intrapreneurship influences current and future export performance. Specifically, this approach views the four distinct dimensions of intrapreneurship, namely new business venturing, innovativeness, self-renewal, and proactiveness, as critical resources, and export market exploitation and exploration as important market learning capabilities. The study posits that such resources and capabilities collectively contribute to improve export performance outcomes. The study develops a theoretically anchored model and employs both structural equation modelling and fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis to test the model relationships. These two techniques have different foci: the net effect of an independent variable on an outcome variable and the conditions that lead to a given outcome, respectively. The study results provide substantial support for the theoretical framework and a valuable addition to the scant literature on the roles of intrapreneurship and market exploitation and exploration in exporting.

This study was conducted to examine the influence of intermediation services on microfinance‐supported microenterprises. Information was collected by using a structured pretested questionnaire from a random section of 366 respondents (from 366 enterprises) from 2 Indian states. Econometric models were used to test the hypotheses, and reliability and validity testing and data analysis were also performed. It was noticed that proactiveness and risk‐taking ability of microenterprises were enhanced when intermediaries emphasize more on the business development services, financial intermediation services, and social intermediation services. Intermediation services of intermediaries impacted on entrepreneurial orientation of microenterprises where networking of microentrepreneurs positively moderated the relationship.
