Entrepreneurially oriented in what? A business model approach to entrepreneurship

Abstract: Purpose:The aim of this article is to illustrate and argue for the necessity of deconstructing the entrepreneurship concept by analyzing entrepreneurial orientation (EO) at various levels of the business model. Design/methodology/approach:Literature review supplemented with five illustrative cases. Findings:A business model approach to entrepreneurship enables identification of the component of the business model in which entrepreneurship was started. This has several implications for analysis of the EO-perfor… Show more

“…For instance, Pérez-Luño et al (2011) note the importance of each of the EO sub-dimensions and especially highlight that innovativeness has been defined too broadly without defining if a firm, for example, adopts or generates innovations. In the same fashion, Andersén et al (2015) argue that the sub-dimensions of EO can be different for different parts of the firm. For example, a firm can be innovative in its marketing while conservative in its product development, and vice versa.…”

“…Indeed, the current literature on EO and its sub-dimensions of innovativeness, risk-taking, and proactiveness has been conceptualized to capture a wide range of phenomena for each sub-dimension. This is highlighted by Andersén et al (2015), who contend that EO needs to be further clarified and that there is value in deconstructing the view of EO, which is often seen at an overall and generic level. This overall view of EO is theoretically modeled as the sub-dimensions reflect the overall EO, and changes in the sub-dimensions are due to a change in the overall EO.…”

“…Another criticism stresses that EO research only measures outcomes, not the underlying processes, and does not provide a holistic understanding of EO (Randerson, 2016). Furthermore, Andersén et al (2015) argued that EO is generally measured on the generic level, that is, the overall EO of the firm, ignoring fluctuations following the business model components of the firm. Nevertheless, the EO measurements do estimate behavioral practices, forming patterns over time, in turn forming the basis for the firm's strategic decision making (Rauch et al, 2009).…”
