This study examines the impact of sustainable design on firms’ social sustainability performance, and the moderating role of Islamic work ethics in this relationship. 344 chemical manufacturing organisations in Malaysia were invited to participate in a survey. Data from 130 completed questionnaire sets were subjected to partial least square (PLS) analysis. The results demonstrated significant effect of sustainable design on social sustainability performance. It was also shown that Islamic work ethics moderate the relationship between sustainable design and social sustainability performance. Al-Quran and hadith were used to support this study to link the relationships of the variables under study, particularly in the context of chemical manufacturing organisations in Malaysia. The present study has furnished significant theoretical contributions of how the Natural-resource-based view theory and stakeholder theory could be incorporated into the present proposed framework with the inclusion of the moderating role of Islamic work ethics, and eventually enrich the findings of extant research. As for practical contributions, businesses in the chemical industry would make well-informed decisions about which eco-friendly practices, particularly sustainable design, to adopt in order to attain social sustainability performance and successfully implement Islamic work ethics. Direction for future research is also recommended.

Purpose This paper investigates the effect of Islamic entrepreneurship on small and medium-sized enterprises' (SMEs) business performance and the development of a framework to comprehensively investigate Islamic entrepreneurship to achieve competitive business advantages. Islamic entrepreneurship was measured through the Islamic entrepreneurial model, which is based on two unobserved constructs: business and spiritual perspectives. These two constructs were used as predictors of business performance. This paper aims to develop a new scale of Islamic entrepreneurship from business and spiritual perspectives to achieve SMEs’ successful business performance. Design/methodology/approach In total, 189 Muslim respondents were involved and analyzed their responses using exploratory factor analysis and confirmatory composite analysis. Findings The empirical findings proved that the Islamic entrepreneurial scale with two perspectives is an absolute measure. Besides, the predictive validity findings revealed that business (i.e. trustworthiness, honesty and truthfulness) and spiritual perspectives of Islamic entrepreneurship (i.e. Taqwa, good intention and respecting religious obligations) positively affected SMEs’ business performance. Originality/value The novelty of this study lies in expanding the existing research, developing a measurement scale and empirically testing the Islamic entrepreneurship model. To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first study that contributes to the Islamic entrepreneurship literature in the SME context and offers new avenues for potential researchers. The new scale will allow SMEs to understand the halal and haram concepts in more depth and apply the Islamic rules and principles with full spirit.

Objective: This study introduces and analyzes a framework for Powerful Entrepreneurial Networking (PEN) to connect Entrepreneurial Orientation (EO) and Marketing Performance (MP) of halal Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in Indonesia. It explores the direct impact of EO and Resource Availability (RA) on marketing performance and examines the mediating role of PEN in these relationships. The study aligns these factors with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), aiming to enhance the economic and social performance of halal SMEs. Theoretical Framework: The research integrates concepts of entrepreneurial orientation, resource availability, and business networks, positing that PEN acts as a mediator, enhancing the influence of EO and RA on marketing performance. This holistic approach underscores the role of both internal capabilities and external networks in achieving business success, particularly within the halal sector. Method: A quantitative research approach was used, applying Structural Equation Modeling with Partial Least Squares (SEM-PLS). Data were collected from 354 halal-certified SMEs in North Sumatra, Indonesia, through structured questionnaires, and SEM-PLS was used to validate the research model. Results and Discussion: The findings reveal that entrepreneurial orientation and resource availability significantly improve the marketing performance of halal SMEs. Furthermore, PEN mediates these effects, enabling SMEs to leverage their entrepreneurial orientation and resources effectively, which is crucial for achieving superior marketing outcomes and contributing to the SDGs. Research Implications: The study offers practical implications for halal SMEs, suggesting the need to focus on entrepreneurial orientation, resource management, and networking to drive sustainable growth and align with SDGs. Originality/Value: This research contributes to the understanding of how PEN mediates the relationship between EO and marketing performance, providing insights into enhancing the capabilities of halal SMEs in line with SDGs.
