Pharmacy technician roles are evolving alongside the changing role of a pharmacist. There is currently no uniform definition of a pharmacy technician’s role in the pharmacy workforce. The objective of this study was to look at the United States-based pharmacy technician advertisement database from Pharmacy Week to find patterns and commonalities in the duties and qualifications of pharmacy technicians. A retrospective analysis was performed on fourteen days of pharmacy technician job listings from Pharmacy Week from the year 2018. Information obtained from the listings included job title, location, setting, type of job, job duties, and job requirements. Job duties and requirements were coded by themes. Fourteen days of data resulted in 21,007 individual position listings. A majority of the job listings were for full-time positions (96.4%) and most were in the retail setting (96.78%). The most common requirements were registration with State Board, high school diploma, ability to perform tasks, communication, and physical. The most common job duties were general office etiquette, performing tasks under the direct supervision of the pharmacist, and professionalism. This study provides a description of the evolving role of pharmacy technicians through the broad variety in expectations for requirements of pharmacy technician applicants and the duties they perform when hired.

Global overview of pharmacy support personnel training programmes: a scoping review protocol

IntroductionA global variation in the pharmacy support personnel training programmes has been observed. The objective of this scoping review is to map out global evidence available on the pharmacy support personnel training programme characteristics, and interface between knowledge, practice and regulatory requirements.Methods and analysisThe scoping review will be undertaken by two independent reviewers. Peer-reviewed journal articles of any study design and grey literature will be included with no publication time limit. All literature published in English focusing on pharmacy support personnel training programmes, entry-level certification requirements, ongoing professional development and apprenticeship will be included. We will search MEDLINE (EBSCOhost), PubMed, CINAHL (EBSCOhost), Web of Science, Academic Search Complete, (EBSCOhost) and Dissertation and Thesis (ProQuest), ProQuest Dissertation and Thesis Global and Google Scholar, and reference list of all included studies. We will also search grey literature from websites of international professional regulatory bodies and associations. All studies that meet the inclusion criteria will be imported into a reference management package (EndNote V.20) that facilitates study selection, screening and de-duplication. Data will be extracted by two independent reviewers using a jointly developed and piloted data charting form. Data items will include skills, knowledge, competencies, admission criteria, content, duration, qualification options, accreditation status, delivery models and approaches. Data extracted from the included studies will be collated, and quantitative results presented using descriptive statistics such as percentages, tables, charts and flow diagrams as appropriate. A narrative account of findings from the literature will be presented following qualitative content analysis of the extracted information using NVivo V.12. Quality appraisal of included studies will not be assessed as the purpose of the scoping review is to give a descriptive global overview of the pharmacy support personnel training programmes, and evidence will also be sourced from grey literature.Ethics and disseminationNo ethical approval is needed for this study as it does not include animals or human participants. Retention of Sterile Compounding Knowledge Among Pharmacy Technicians

Background: Patient safety is in jeopardy due to a rise in the preparation of adulterated parenteral products with poor technique identified as a significant contributing factor. Pharmacy technicians perform an overwhelming majority of aseptic compounding practices; however, this group’s progressive loss of aseptic technique knowledge has not been documented. Objective: The purpose of this correlational research study was to investigate the association between sterile compounding knowledge and years in the field controlling for formal training in sterile compounding techniques. Methods: An assessment tool of fundamental sterile compounding content was electronically distributed to sterile compounding technician members of pharmacy organizations in the southeastern United States. A multiple regression was conducted to predict sterile compounding knowledge from number of years in the field and prior years of formal compounding training. Results: Sixty-eight assessments were returned complete. The overall model was significant ( P < .0005), explaining 22% of the variance in knowledge retention. Years in the field was the only significant predictor ( P < .001). Each additional year of work experience was associated with a 0.18 drop in the assessment score. Conclusions: The longer pharmacy technicians remain in the field, the more aseptic technique knowledge they will lose. Modeling of poor sterile compounding techniques in the workplace may promote loss of competency of the skill. As a result, a plan to address continuing education for pharmacy technician sterile compounders is necessary to ensure patient safety.
