In hospital construction, additional challenges must be considered, such as an increased number of stakeholders and building trades, such as medical and laboratory technology. Due to the increasing requirements and challenges, associated construction processes are becoming more intricate. Especially for complex building types, the effects of this development are clearly noticeable and cause considerable disruptions to the construction process. A main difficulty constitutes the missing definition of the interfaces of building trades and participants. In the present study, interfaces in hospital construction were identified and analyzed by guided interviews with experts from the health sector. The qualitative content analysis, according to Mayring, was used for the evaluation to derive appropriate solution approaches. This paper presents the interfaces using the example of hospital construction in Germany and general approaches of optimization. Hereby, the digital method Building Information Modeling (BIM) plays a decisive role in the optimization of interfaces, especially in complex buildings. Furthermore, a task and building trade control matrix is required to better coordinate the interfaces. The identified approach intends to alleviate potential disputes and misunderstandings among stakeholders, as well as to improve time and financial predictability, which are particularly valuable during inflationary periods.

Planning and approval processes in Germany still take many years in some cases. According to the Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport digitalization must be used to pick up the pace and achieve progress. In this context, digital methods and applications such as a Common Data Environment (CDE) promise to accelerate and increase the efficiency of road construction projects. This paper first provides an illustration of the main purposes and functions of a CDE. This includes an in‐depth study of current national and international regulations. Subsequently, challenges and optimization opportunities related to the planning and approval process are identified. To this purpose, a quantitative research approach questioning employees from state and federal road construction administrations is carried out. This study identifies improvement potentials through a CDE application especially regarding tracing and transparency. According to the study, the planning and approval process needs to get digitalized, simplified and shorten. Therefore, future research needs to address the question of how to implement a cross‐country CDE for planning and approval processes that interfaces with various state and federal systems without displacing them.

For several years, the use of the BIM method has been mandatory for public new construction and replacement projects of the transport infrastructure in the Federal Republic of Germany. As a result, about 20 use cases (UC) for the application of digital models have been defined. Most of them focus on the planning and execution phase. Despite the importance and long duration of the operational phase, there are isolated definitions for use case for operational phase and therefore underrepresented in the overall context. Moreover, none of the published use cases so far consider the specifics of bridge structures. For this reason, a further definition of specific BIM use cases for the operation of bridge structures is needed. In this article, BIM use cases for the use of digital models of bridge structures in the operation and maintenance phase are defined based on a qualitative empirical study. First, the current state of the art is elaborated by means of a literature analysis. Based on this, a expert interviews are conducted and systematically evaluated. The BIM use cases for operation are derived from the results. In addition, requirements and artifacts are defined. This results in a further specification of the use of BIM models in the operational phase of bridge structures and promotes the digitalization of maintenance management.
