Environment and the Evolutionary Trajectory of Horizontal Gene Transfer

Abstract: Gene acquisition through horizontal gene transfer (HGT) may either exert a beneficial, neutral, or deleterious fitness effect on the recipient cell thereby determining the evolutionary fate of the newly transferred gene.
