“…The results of present study are not consistent with the findings of some studies that showed NGF reduction by progesterone following brain injury [50] and lack of NGF effect on neuronal recovery following TBI [51]. Possible differences in the results of the present study with others can be due to the difference in the type of brain injuries [50], the dosage and method of progesterone administration, and the severity of neurological injury [51].…”

“…Under experimental conditions environmental enrichment refers to housing conditions when complex motor, sensory, and cognitive stimulation is provided compared to a standard environment [30]. Numerous investigations provide evidence that enriched circumstances have protective effects against neural lesions caused by ischemic [57,58,59], toxic [27,60,61], and traumatic injuries [62,63,64]. Several research groups have described that enriched environment has an impact on the severity of symptoms and the progression of Parkinson’s disease.…”

“…In humans, the high dose of 0.2 mg/kg/day was used in a case report of TBI, cited above (Chiaretti et al, 2017). Based on this evidence and on the duration chosen for the treatment, we decided to use an intermediate dose of NGF (5 µg/kg/day), which was previously described as safe for a 7 day treatment (Young et al, 2015). For the design of the current study, we thoroughly examined the data in the literature to decide how to target tissue reconstruction and functional recovery in our model of brain lesion in rats.…”
