Environmental exposure to the plasticizer 1,2-cyclohexane dicarboxylic acid, diisononyl ester (DINCH) in US adults (2000—2012)

Abstract: Abstract1,2-Cyclohexane dicarboxylic acid, diisononyl ester (DINCH) is a complex mixture of nine carbon branched-chain isomers. It has been used in Europe since 2002 as a plasticizer to replace phthalates such as di(2-ethylhexyl)phthalate (DEHP) and diisononyl phthalate (DINP). Urinary concentrations of the oxidative metabolites of DINCH, namely cyclohexane-1,2-dicarboxylic acidmonocarboxy isooctyl ester (MCOCH); cyclohexane-1,2-dicarboxylic acid-mono(oxo-isononyl) ester (MONCH); and cyclohexane-1,2-dicarboxyl… Show more

“…Overall, the body burden of DINCH metabolites exhibited a similar time trend as previously discussed for the dust concentrations observed in German residences by Nagorka et al (2011a, b). In a third study, Silva et al (2013) collected anonymous urine samples in Atlanta in 2000, 2001, 2007, 2009, 2011, and The "typical" and "high" total DI and daily inhaled and ingested (house dust) amounts calculated from our study"s results were compared with estimated tolerable daily intake (TDI)…”

“…Our results and previously published data are summarized in Table 6. To date, DINCH metabolites have been measured only in three studies using adults (Schütze et al, 2012;2014;Silva et al, 2013). After developing an analytical method to quantify DINCH metabolites in urine, Schütze et al (2012) 1999, 2003, 2006, 2009, and 2012 were investigated to observe possible time trends for DINCH exposure since its market introduction (Schütze et al, 2014).…”

“…Urine samples were vortexed, divided into several aliquots and stored at −80°C before being shipped overnight on dry ice to the CDC's National Center for Environmental Health, where the urinary biomarkers were quantified via enzymatic deconjugation, solidphase extraction, separation and analyses using liquid chromatography mass spectrometry (Silva et al, 2013).…”

“…We previously observed similar metabolite clusters for other plasticizers, including di-isononyl phthalate and 1,2-cyclohexane dicarboxylic acid, diisononyl ester. 1518 Because all coeluting isomers of MEHHA and MEOHA are valid biomarkers of exposure to DEHA and similar in structure with different oxidation sites, we did not attempt to separate the isomers and included them together to facilitate their detection.…”
