Environmental Factors in Obsessive-Compulsive Behavior: Evidence from Discordant and Concordant Monozygotic Twins

Abstract: To investigate environmental factors that protect against or exacerbate obsessive-compulsive (OC) symptoms, we selected 25 monozygotic (MZ) twin pairs discordant, 17 MZ twin pairs concordant high and 34 MZ pairs concordant low on OC symptoms from a large longitudinal Dutch sample of adult twin pairs and their family members, applying stringent criteria for OC symptomatology. Data were collected on psychopathology, family structure, health, lifestyle, birth complications and life events. Unique environmental fa… Show more

“…Observation of high obsessive compulsive traits among the FDR and positive correlations between neuroticism and perfectionism (Stumpf and Parker 2000) substantiates the finding of elevated neuroticism in this group. Cath et al (2008) confirm higher genetic load on neuroticism and Lesch et al (1996) also demonstrated an association of neurotic traits with a Polymorphism in the Serotonin Transporter Gene Regulatory Region accounting for 7-9 % of inherited variance in personality traits in siblings of OCD. Lower Extraversion score in OCD compared to the controls, describe OCD as reserved, even-paced individuals (Costa and McCrae 1992).…”

“…Zygosity was assessed by a questionnaire using items on physical similarity, blood group and DNA polymorphisms (Willemsen et al, 2013). For both Surveys 6 and 8, OC symptom scores were measured with the Padua Inventory abbreviated (PI-R ABBR; Cath et al, 2008). This 12-item questionnaire has been derived from the Padua Inventory-Revised (PI-R), a widely used 41-item self-report inventory on OC symptoms, with item ratings between 0-4, and five subscales (washing, checking, rumination, precision, and impulses; Sanavio, 1988;van Oppen, 1992).…”
