Environmental Regulation, Two-Way Foreign Direct Investment, and Green Innovation Efficiency in China’s Manufacturing Industry

Abstract: This paper adopts 2009 to 2015 panel data from 27 manufacturing industries in China. A Super-SBM model is used to measure the green innovation efficiency (GIE) of China’s manufacturing industry. A panel data model is then built to systematically examine the impact of environmental regulation (ER) and two-way foreign direct investment (FDI) on the GIE of China’s manufacturing industry under a unified analysis framework. The results are as follows: (1) the overall level of the green innovation efficiency in Chin… Show more

“…Firstly, on the basis of the results above, the introduction of foreign direct investment contributes to the improvement of the RCA based on export value added. Similarly, Feng et al [59] confirm that the two-way foreign direct investment is significantly beneficial to the green innovation efficiency of China's manufacturing industry. Therefore, we believe that the extroversion and internationalization of China's manufacturing industry, together with bilateral investment agreements in an international context, can favor the export competitiveness of industrial enterprises through environmentally friendly production processes.…”

“…Environmentally friendly products produced by eco-innovation can lend firms a competitive edge and thus improve firm's business performance [51]. Finally, EREG can keep firms that do not meet emission standards from entering the market through raising the entry criteria, e.g., raising pollutants emission standards, energy use standards, and energy efficiency standards [49,52]. In this way, EREG can optimize the market structure, reduce intensive competition, and increase firms' market share, thus contributing to the improvement of firm performance.…”

“…When scholars examine the effects of ERs on TI, they also use the newly developed methodologies to evaluate the efficiency of TI. Feng et al [16] measure the efficiency of green innovation via super-slack-based measure and demonstrate that the influence of ERs on the efficiency of green innovation is significantly negative. Zhu et al [15] construct a game cross-efficiency model to measure technological innovation efficiency and indicate that the effect of mandatory regulation on technological innovation efficiency turns out to be insignificant, whereas voluntary regulation has positive effects at the provincial level.…”

“…The impacts of ERs on TI have been widely studied for several decades [14,15], and diverse resulting relationships (e.g., positive, negative, neutral and nonlinear) have been found [14,[16][17][18]. In this paper, we also analyze the impacts of ERs on TI in the Chinese context, but there are several differences compared to prior studies.…”
