Environmental Tobacco Smoke Particles

Abstract: IntroductionEnvironmental tobacco smoke (ETS) is a mixture of gases and particles. It is generated by the combustion of tobacco products, including cigarettes, cigars, and pipes. Most ETS issues from the smoldering tobacco between puffs. Exhaled mainstream smoke also contributes to ETS.Once released to the environment, the particles and gases in ETS are subjected to physical and chemical processes that can alter their concentrations, their physical form, and their chemical composition. For example, dispersion … Show more

“…The mass median diameter (MMD) values reported in the literature for SHS range from approximately 200 to 500 nm and the GSD values from approximately 1 to 3 Nazaroff and Klepeis 2003;Liu and Zhu 2010). We found MMDs ranging from 227 nm, in the freshly diluted smoke at site 1, to 298 nm, at the terminus of the aging system.…”

“…Time-averaged equations compute long-term average values and accommodate periodically cycling inputs that are considered as average values (El Orch et al, 2014; Nazaroff and Klepeis, 2003; Riley et al, 2002). Our model is admittedly a simplified representation of the true kinetics and is not explicit.…”

“…Nazaroff and Klepeis (2003) have summarized the generation rates of RSP during smoking for cigars and cigarettes reported by various investigators. According to their report, the SS+MS mass emission rate during cigarette smoking varies from 0.76 to 3.6 mg/min in different studies.…”
