Enzyme polymorphisms and haemoglobin variants in Greeks

Abstract: Several enzyme polymorphisms and hemoglobin variants were typed in a sample of n = 219 non-related Greek blood-donors. The following gene frequencies were observed: pa = 0.201, pb = 0.701, pc = 0.098;PGDA = 0.985, PGDc = 0.015; AK1 = 0.942, AK2 = 0.058; HbA = 0.988, HbS = 0.012. No polymorphic variation was seen in LDH, s-MDH, PHI, or SOD. The population genetical aspects of these results are discussed.

“…This cline in gene frequencies is well correlated with the hyperendemic malaria which was present in these regions [1,9,15]. Schneid er et al [18] claimed that the HbD variant seemed to be extremely rare in Greece, but the results of Tsistrakis et al [20] and ours (table I) probably suggest an increased in cidence of the HhD allele in Greece.…”

“…In the Hp and ABO systems a good agreement has been found between the observed phenotype [10,18]. Important deviations, however, from the gene frequencies found in other sur veys in close areas of Macedonia (Thessa loniki and Chalkidiki) were observed (table II) at the Hb and G6PD loci.…”

“…An exception is the Lerna population and the Athenian Agora, where the numbers are comparable for both sexes, probably due to the better preservation of the skeletal material (Halstead 1977in Liston 1993. Some studies dealt with paleopathology of different populations of late Bronze and Iron Age (Angel 1944, 1973, 1975, Angel and Burns 1973McGeorge 1980in Liston 1993. Dentition is one of the best-preserved parts of the skeleton in archaeological samples, so many of the studies focused on ancient populations' dental health (Angel, 1944).…”
