Epidemiologic characteristics of rhegmatogenous retinal detachment in Kumamoto, Japan

Abstract: Compared with previously published studies from other countries, the incidence of detachments associated with lattice degeneration and macular hole was higher, while the incidences of aphakic detachment and detachment due to blunt trauma were lower in Japan. Racial factors and living habits may affect the development of retinal detachment.

“…In all the studies, RRD incidences were similar from 0 to 49 years of age, but significant differences in RRD incidences were observed in age groups above 50 years. As stated above, both Caucasians and Asians showed a peak RRD incidence at 50–79 years of age; however, Caucasians (studies in the Netherlands, [13] Scotland, [12] Brazil, [10] New Zealand, [9] and United States [14] ) had significantly higher RRD incidences at 50 years and over than did the Asians (studies in Korea, China, [7] , [8] Singapore, [6] and Japan [5] ). Myopia is more frequent and more severe in Asians than in Caucasians, and people with myopia develop posterior vitreous detachment (PVD) earlier and more frequently.…”

“…Our results showed a bimodal distribution of RRD incidences according to age group, and the seventh decade of life showed a peak incidence of RRD, which coincides with the peak-incidence age in other countries ( Table 3 ). [5] , [8] , [9] , [13] – [15] , [18] Although these studies had different study periods, population coverage, population size, data source, and age-group categories, an increasing trend was observed in RRD incidences with age. In all the studies, RRD incidences were similar from 0 to 49 years of age, but significant differences in RRD incidences were observed in age groups above 50 years.…”
