Epidermal curettage technique (ECT) for tissue harvest from the donor area for melanocyte autologous grafting in cases of vitiligo

Abstract: Vitiligo is a dermatosis requiring complex treatment. In clinically stable cases, melanocyte autologous grafting has shown good results, using different methodologies for obtaining the donor area: dermatomes, punches, blisters. However, these techniques are complex and require specific instruments. This study presents a simple technique for melanocyte harvest that has been performed in our service for more than ten years and includes epidermal curettage of the donor area, grafting of the obtained material, whi… Show more

“…Epidermal cells can be obtained by resection of a thin layer of skin, using a flexible blade, through the epidermal curettage or through manual dermabrasion. 18 , 21 , 24 The receptor area can be prepared by manual or motorized dermabrasion device, CO 2 lasers, liquid nitrogen, among others. 25 One recent article published by Al-Hadidi et al (2016) suggests that post-operative care is also essential to the success of the treatment.…”

“…Surgical techniques have proven to be effective in stable cases, and melanocyte transfer may be performed by punch minigrafting, split‐thickness skin grafting, hair follicle transplantation, suction blisters, epidermal curettage techniques and cultured and non‐cultured autologous melanocytes. The previous surgical and cultured techniques can be time‐consuming and, in some cases, aesthetically unsatisfying or painful for the patients . In recent years, new non‐cultured autologous epidermal techniques have been developed with similar results to the cultured melanocytes techniques, but are simpler, less expensive and less time‐consuming.…”

“…The curettage technique has been known for over several dozen years, yet it was not initially considered one of the possible forms of tissue grafting in the course of vitiligo [44]. However, the clinical effects associated with the use of this method prompted researchers to further analyze this therapeutic option [45].…”
