Epidural abscess after multiple lumbar punctures for labour epidural catheter placement

Abstract: Epidural catheterization is routinely used by anaesthesiologists to provide labour and post-operative analgesia. In most cases, catheter placement is without serious side effects and uneventful. However, epidural abscess is a rare complication that may result in severe morbidity. “…In this case, from the expiration date of autologous blood transfusion, we expected epidural catheter placement for about a week. There have been reports of epidural abscess in pregnant women [12], and it is evident that long-term placement increases the risk of epidural abscess. Pain management using epidural anesthesia in the retrocaval ureter in pregnant women should be used to prepare for cesarean section in a short time.…”

“…This can result in patient discomfort, accidental dural puncture, and potential trauma to the nerves, vessels, bones, and ligaments . Multiple insertion attempts could result in nerve damage causing epidural abscess infection . Other complications of neuraxial anesthesia involve spinal hematomas, bleeding diathesis, and left ventricular outflow obstruction.…”

X-ray-based fluoroscopy is the only competing real-time intra-operative modality with US, 5 but it is not portable and uses ionizing radiations.…”
