Epizootic Ulcerative Syndrome: Information up to 1997.

Abstract: Epizootic ulcerative syndrome or EUS has been endemic in many countries in Asia and the Indo Pacific region since 1980. It has affected a wide range of fish species.Infected fish reveal dermal ulcerative lesions throughout the body. The outbreaks occur at certain times of the year, normally after flooding followed by cool weather.Typical clinical signs of the early stages of this disease are the petechial haemorrhagic lesions on the skin which later develop into deep ulcerative lesions throughout the body. “…A. astaci, which has been described by Schikora (1903), infects freshwater crayfish (Söderhäll and Cerenius, 1999). Both A. invadans and A. piscicida devastated natural and cultured stocks of freshwater and estuarine fish (Chinabut, 1998;Johnson et al, 2004). Some authors confirmed this both species as synonym (Dieguez-Uribeondo et al, 2009), others-as separate species (Phadee et al, 2004a, b).…”

“…Aphanomyces astaci is known to cause so-called "plague" of crayfish (Schikora, 1903) and A. laevis known in mass deaths of rainbow trout during reproduction on the Taiwan (Chien, 1981). Since the mid-1980s epizootic ulcerative syndrome (EUS) have been described as a disease affecting wild and farmed freshwater and estuarine fish (Chinabut, 1998). It has been reported from Australia, North America, Asia and Africa (OIE, 2007).…”

“…In Bangladesh, the losses in fish mortality amounted to about US$5.6 million (ADB/NACA, 1991). A number of comprehensive reviews on economic loss and impact aspect of EUS were reported (Roberts et al, 1993;Noga, 1993;Chinabut, et al, 1995;Roberts, 1997;Chinabut, 1998;Lilley et al 1998), besides EUS has listed by the Network of Aquaculture Centers in Asia-pacific (NACA) and internationally by the World Organization for Animal Health (Office International des Epizooties or OIE) (AFFA, 2000;FAO, 2009;Pradhan et al, 2014).…”

“…The etiology for this disease may involve multiple pathogens; however, most consistently, Aphanomyces invadans (Family: Leptolegniaceae) has been isolated from lesioned fishes in the USA (Blazer et al 1999, 2002, Vandersea et al 2006, Sosa et al 2007b. A. invadans is an oomycete that is widespread in distribution and has been linked with cases of EUS since it was first documented in Japan in 1971 (Chinabut 1998, Lilley et al 1998. While most severe cases of EUS in southeast Asia and Australia are reported from aquaculture facilities, those in the USA are almost exclusively reported from wild-caught fishes (Dykstra et al 1989, Noga et al 1991, Blazer et al 1999.…”
