Epstein-Barr virus-associated gastric ulcer mimicking gastric neoplasia: a case report

Abstract: We describe a rare case of a severe gastric ulcer of a 66-year-old immunocompetent man who was associated with primary Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection and temporarily misdiagnosed with gastric lymphoma. A contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CT-scan) of the thorax, abdomen and pelvis followed by EUS revealed a neoplastic infiltrative-ulcerative semicircumferentialgastric mass and a 1 cm large satellite adenopathy, being classified as T3N1M0 gastric neoplasia. The histological analysis of the ¾ distal stom… Show more

“…Waage et al reported that strain ratio measurements in strain elastography were significantly different between adenomas and adenocarcinomas. Moreover, the use of strain ratio measurements to discriminate benign lesions from malignant ones offers high sensitivity (82.0%), specificity (86.0%), and accuracy (84.0%), meaning that strain elastography can provide added value when used in conjunction with endorectal US [ 8 , 9 ]. These images, however, do not directly quantify the elasticity of the tumor.…”

“…Analyzing the possible prognostic value of Hep Par-1 in patients with surgically resected HCC, Mondada et al [21] finds Hep Par-1 expression, considering it a favorable prognostic factor in small size tumors. Otherwise, tumor size and growth has been already linked to multiple cellular and plasmatic markers hyper expression [22][23][24][25].…”

“…Perforations represent a significant part of the possible complications related to upper gastrointestinal procedures, with an increased incidence among interventional endoscopic techniques (1). Both endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) and endoscopic sphincterotomy have an overall complications-associated rate between 0.09% and 1.67% (2, 3) with duodenal perforations representing 0.08 % to 0.6% (4,5,6) or roughly one third of the total ERCP related perforations.…”
