Equipment and Techniques for Low Temperature Electron Irradiations

Abstract: A system is described for making low temperature electron bombardment studies. A liquid helium Dewar is used in ?onjunction wit? a 1.2-Mey Dynamitron electron accelerator. Cooling is by conduction, and annealing is accomplish~d by balancmg the hehum fl?w rate thro~gh the cooling coils with a heater located within the cooling head. Details of the sample mount are given along With the beam positioning and monitoring devices.

We describe a single refrigerant, variable temperature Dewar employing the forced convection of cold gas to obtain sample temperatures in the range 12 to 300 K. Although the Dewar was developed for cathodoluminescence studies using 100 to 400 keV electrons, the design permits easy modification for other uses. The Dewar features quick cool-down time, the option of fast thermal cycling, the efficient removal of heat from small irregularly shaped samples mounted strain-free, the ability to change samples quickly at all temperatures, and thermometry isolated from the sample irradiation chamber.

A cryostat is described for irradiations with electrons at liquid helium temperatures and subsequent photoconductivity and infrared absorption studies in the range from 20 to 400 K. Heat is removed from the sample by conduction through a copper tail touching the bottom of the liquid helium container. A mechanical ``switch'' enables the thermal separation of the sample assembly from the helium bath during the annealing studies. A rotatable outer-tail piece permits irradiation with electrons through aluminum windows avoiding damage to the optical NaCl windows. The beam dosimetry and monitoring equipment are described in detail.

A mounting of metallic resistivity specimens is described which allows low temperature electron irradiation within the vacuum system of the particle accelerator. The heat generated in the specimens during irradiation is transferred to the specimen holder via solderable sapphire plates which provide a good thermal contact and also the electrical insulation required. The temperature distribution in the specimens is calculated for general parameters. The maximum specimen temperature can be monitored continuously during the irradiation. Good agreement is found between calculated and measured maximum temperature.
