ERCP Procedures in a Finnish Community Hospital: A Retrospective Analysis of 1207 Cases

Abstract: Results: Cannulation of the desired duct was successful in 89.2% of 825 ERCPs with no earlier sphincterotomy. Complete stone removal was achieved in 91.3% of procedures. standard biliary sphincterotomy was performed in 73.8% and precut sphincterotomy in 12.0 % of cases. Cholangitis developed in 2.1%, bleeding in 1.9%, pancreatitis in 1.9%, perforation in 1.0% and cardio-pulmonary or miscellaneous complications in 4.2% of cases. the majority of complications could be managed conservatively. in procedures with n… Show more

“…ERCP is a technically challenging procedure, with reported rates of successful cannulation varying between 63% and 98% [12][13][14][15][16]. This wide discrepancy in successful cannulation in these studies can be the result of differences in operator experience in performing this procedure or due to various anatomical factors such as the deep location of the ampulla of Vater in periampullary diverticula, the deformations or strictures of the pylorus and duodenum, or postgastrectomy anatomical changes [17,18].…”

“…The overall complication rate for ERCP ranges from 0.8–11.1%, although therapeutic ERCP is associated with a higher complication rate compared to diagnostic ERCP. [4346] ERCP-induced pancreatitis occurs in 0.2–5.2% of procedures, and is typically mild or moderate. [4446] Hemorrhage (0.2–1.9%), perforation (0.2–1.0%), and cholangitis (0.1–2.1%) are less commonly encountered.…”

[4446] Increasing age, sphincterotomy technique, failure to clear the bile duct, and obstruction of the ampulla of Vater have been associated with an increased risk of ERCP-induced complications.…”
