EROD activity and cytochrome P4501A induction in liver and gills of Senegal sole Solea senegalensis from a polluted Huelva Estuary (SW Spain)

Abstract: EROD activity and induction cytochrome P4501A in liver and gills of Senegal sole, Solea senegalensis, from a heavy metal and PAH polluted estuary, was studied. Liver and gill CYP1A catalytic activity was assessed at the enzyme activity level-measured as 7-ethoxyresorufin-O-deethylase and cellular localization of CYP1A in the liver was studied using immunohistochemistry. Liver EROD was correlated with phenanthrene-type metabolites in liver and copper concentrations in water. Strong CYP1A occurrence was observed… Show more

“…65,66 Thus, it may be mainly the thermal inflexibility of cytochrome P4501A (reflected by EROD activity) that could limit the xenobiotics metabolism capability of Antarctic fish during future seawater warming and pollution.…”

“…Biomarkers combined with metal body burdens of resident organisms have been widely used in aquatic pollution monitoring (Van der Oost et al 2003;Au 2004;Giarratano et al 2010;Duarte et al 2011;Oliva et al 2012Oliva et al , 2014Barhoumi et al 2014;Morachis-Valdez et al 2015), though most biomarker-based environmental quality studies were performed exclusively in highly anthropized sites (Malins et al 2006;Ramos-Gómez et al 2011;Ben Ameur et al 2012;Maranho et al 2012;Pereira et al 2014). We hypothesize that biomarkers are adequate for assessing the environmental quality of MPAs.…”

“…Thus, over the past decade, an increasing number of studies have explored the possibility of using CYP450 system as biomarkers of adverse effects at the cellular level (Eggens et al, 1995;Jonsson et al, 2003;Oliva et al, 2014). Studies on the induction of CYP450 systems in fish have focused primarily in the liver.…”

“…The CYP450 system is responsible for the metabolism of a wide range of endogenous and xenobiotic compounds, as it plays important roles in the toxicology, metabolism and excretion of pollutants, drugs and many carcinogenic chemicals and mediates the transformation of certain xenobiotics to their reactive intermediates (Nahrgang et al, 2010;Oliva et al, 2014). Thus, over the past decade, an increasing number of studies have explored the possibility of using CYP450 system as biomarkers of adverse effects at the cellular level (Eggens et al, 1995;Jonsson et al, 2003;Oliva et al, 2014).…”
