The ideal gas heat capacity of sodium atoms in the vapor phase is calculated to high temperatures using statistical mechanics. Since there are, in principle, an infinite number of atomic energy levels, the partition function and the heat capacity will grow very large unless the summation over energy levels is constrained as temperature increases. At higher temperatures, the increasing size of the atoms, which is a consequence of the increased population of highly excited energy levels, is used as a mechanism for limiting the summation over energy levels. The "IP − kT " and "Bethe" procedures for cutting off the summation over energy levels will be discussed, and the results obtained using the two methods will be compared. In addition, although experimental information is available about lower atomic energy levels and some theoretical calculations are available for excited energy levels, information is lacking for most individual atomic states associated with highly excited energy levels. A "fill" procedure for approximating the energy of the unknown states will be discussed. Sodium vapor will also be considered to be a real gas that obeys the virial equation of state. The first non-ideal term in the power series expansion of the heat capacity in terms of virial coefficients involves the second virial coefficient, B(T ). This depends on the interaction potential energy between two sodium atoms, i.e., the potential energy curves for the sodium dimer. Accurate interaction potential energies can be obtained from either experimental or theoretical information for the lowest ten electronic states of the sodium dimer. These are used to calculate B(T ) for each state, and the averaged value of B(T ) for all ten states is used to calculate the non-ideal contribution to the heat capacity of sodium atoms as a function of temperature.

The rate coefficient for the laser-induced associative-ionization reaction of ultracold Na in an optical trap is calculated as a function of the trap laser detuning from the Na( SI&&, F =2)~Na( P3&2, F =3) resonance. Aided by a knowledge of the excited-state potential-energy curves and of the nature of the free-atom optical-pumping process, we propose the following mechanism, which we call photoassociative ionization (PAI): 2Na( X"+)~Na2 (Og and lg )~Na& *(1") -+Na&++ e . Maxima in the calculated PAI rate coefficient occur at detunings that are simultaneously one-photon resonant with bound levels of the long-range 0~s tate and two-photon resonant with the lower rotational levels of a vibrational level lying 9 GHz below the dissociation threshold of the autoionizing 1"state. The calculated PAI spectrum (PAI rate coefficient versus trap-laser detuning) displays a series of broad peaks between -0.5 and -4 GHz detuning and a cutoff at -5 GHz detuning, as does the experimentally measured spectrum of Lett et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 67, 2139(1991]. The broad widths of the peaks in the PAI spectrum is due in part to the orientation averaging of the collision vector with respect to the electric-field vector and to the optical pumping of the Na2~Na~rovibronic transition. The calculated PAI rate coefficient at -0.6 GHz detuning is a factor of 4 higher than the experimental value. Fine-structure-changing transitions play a role in the doubly excited states, because of the 1"avoided crossing, but not in the intermediate states, because they have gerade symmetry and the only states that have been shown to undergo finestructure-changing transitions with large probability have ungerade symmetry. Several predictions based on the proposed model and suggestions for future experiments are discussed. Vibrational levels a few eV below the dissociation asymptote 3s#3p of Na were studied in a molecular beam. The hyperfine structure could be resolved. The molecular levels can be described by adiabatic potentials calculated with the help of atomic parameters: spin-orbit parameter, hyperfine parameter and lifetime of the 3p level. This gives a very precise picture of long range interactions up to internuclear distances R+250 A s . Retardation effects were not identified within the error limits of the data in agreement with theoretical estimates. The life-time derived for the 3p level of the sodium atom agrees very well with independent measurements from different methods.
