Eruption Timing and Sequence of Primary Teeth in a Sample of Romanian Children

Abstract: Teething is considered a significant event in the growth and development of the child by parents and especially by paediatric dentists and forensic scientists. They constantly need an “up-to-date mirror” of its variability for different geographic regions. The aims of the current study were to determine the timing and sequence of primary tooth emergence, and to establish a correlation between tooth eruption and general growth and external parameters in a sample of Romanian children. This study included 70 heal… Show more

“…Since this study was based on intraoral observations of parents, it is possible that the eruption time of the primary teeth was less accurately identified and recorded. However, in this study, we asked the parents to describe only primary central incisors and primary lateral incisors, which are easy to find and reported to erupt earlier than the primary canines and molars [33]. In addition, since our study is an adjunct study of a national large-cohort study, large numbers of parents participated in our survey.…”

“…In addition, since our study is an adjunct study of a national large-cohort study, large numbers of parents participated in our survey. Further, we excluded the possibly wrong answers such as 5 or more teeth erupted on the same day, different eruption dates between the two surveys, or earlier eruption of lateral incisors than the central incisors in the same jaw according to the past report [33] and our own clinical experience. Therefore, we believe that the accuracy of the information can be assured in the present study.…”

“…[1][2][3][5][6][7][8][9] The most described sequence for both arches is the following: central incisor, lateral incisor, first molar, canine and second molar. 2,5,10,11 This sequence may vary, as noted in the study by Woodroffe et al in 2010, and the most common variation is between maxillary and mandibular central incisors and between maxillary and mandibular lateral incisors. 10 The timing of eruption of deciduous dentition has been reported to vary widely between populations, suggesting a strong influence of environmental and genetic factors.…”

“…10 The timing of eruption of deciduous dentition has been reported to vary widely between populations, suggesting a strong influence of environmental and genetic factors. 1,5,7,8,[11][12][13] Other factors, such as gender, socioeconomic status, gestation time, weight and height at birth, nutritional particularities, and maternal factors, have also been pointed out as having a relevant role. 3,4,[6][7][8][9][11][12][13][14][15][16][17][18] Concerning gender, tooth eruption seems to occur earlier in males than in females.…”
