ESBL-producing Shiga-toxigenic E. coli (STEC) associated with piglet diarrhoea in India

Abstract: The present study was conducted to investigate the prevalence of extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL)-producing Escherichia coli carrying other virulence genes associated with piglet diarrhoea. Faecal samples from the piglets with history of diarrhoea were processed for isolation of E. coli and were tested for their ability of ESBL production. ESBL encoding genes and other virulence genes were detected by specific PCR, and amplicons were sequenced. Ability of transferring the ESBL genes between the enteric … Show more

“…the birds are successfully reared in a backyard system because they can easily scavenge food like indigenous birds (ahUJa et al, 2008). In India, earlier studies conducted P. Ghosh et al: extended-spectrum cephalosporinase possessing E. coli in kuroilers in healthy livestock, such as cattle, pigs and broilers, revealed the existence of eSBLproducing E. coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae (LaLZaMPUIa et al, 2013;LaLZaMPUIa et al, 2014;SaMaNta et al, 2015;SaMaNta et al, 2015a;kar et al, 2015;MaNDakINI et al, 2015). the status of other domestic birds such as kuroilers as reservoirs of extendedspectrum cephalosporinase-producing E. coli is still unexplored.…”

“…Among the serogroups isolated, untypeable was detected with maximum frequency (4/12, 33.3%) as ESBL/beta-lactamase producers. Similarly Mandakini et al (2015) reported the highest frequency of UT (11/43, 25.5%) followed by O26 (8/ 43, 18.6%) in ESBL-E. coli isolated from diarrhoeic pigs in India.…”

“…All the suspected ESBLs producing isolates were subjected to PCR for detection of ESBLs producing genes ( bla TEM , bla SHV , bla CTX-M , and bla CMY ) using specific primers [ 5 ]. PCR was carried out in a 0.2 ml thin wall PCR tubes with a final volume of 25 µl containing 10× buffer, 1.5 mM MgCl 2 , 200 pM of each oligonucleotide primers, 200 µM of each dNTPs, 1 U of Taq polymerase, and 50 pg DNA.…”

“…Although a handful of sporadic report on MDR enteric bacteria of animal origin from different parts of India is available, so far, very little is known about the MDR bacteria in pigs of Northeastern region of India [ 5 ]. The present study was undertaken to record the prevalence of ESBLs producing E. coli , Salmonella spp., and K. pneumoniae from pig population of Assam and Meghalaya and to record the ability of the resistant bacteria to transfer the resistance genes horizontally.…”
