Escaping Car Dependence in the Outer Suburbs of Paris

Abstract: The outer suburbs of Paris are home to a large number of low-income households driven from the centre by the workings of the property market. This shift could give rise to a new form of socio-spatial segregation insofar as the elevated costs of mobility in such highly car-dependent areas restrict and change these households' mobility patterns. These effects were observed in data on three groups of working people from the 2001 global transport survey. However, the socio-spatial impact of this outward movement i… Show more

“…Clearly not all such drivers can be accounted for in univariate quantitative metrics: the approach taken here is to use quantitative analysis as a vehicle to consider what oil vulnerability may mean, in relation to phenomena that are less ambiguous and about which more is known. In addition, it is important to remember that the processes dominant in one location may be less so in another: while spatial segregation was found to be a major driver of oil vulnerability in suburban Australia (Dodson and Sipe, 2007), a study comparing travel behaviours with car ownership across Parisian municipalities found that car-free groups tended to gravitate towards areas with more local amenities, mitigating the buildup of 'transport stress' (related to oil vulnerability) in car-dependent suburban zones (Motte-Baumvol et al, 2010).…”
