Esomeprazole in acute and maintenance treatment of reflux oesophagitis: a multicentre prospective study

Abstract: Esomeprazole is effective in the healing of reflux oesophagitis, the resolution of heartburn, and in maintaining symptomatic remission. The effectiveness of esomeprazole in patients with gastroesophageal reflux disease is not affected by the presence of H. pylori.

“…The rate of complete remission of heartburn was 67.0% in RE, 60.4% in NERD, and 60.4% in PPI-resistant GERD in the present study. A previous report states that the resolution rate in RE at 4 weeks was 68.1% using EPZ 20 mg, [ 31 ] and 51.1% in mild RE and 35.8% in NERD using rabeprazole 20 mg. [ 32 ] Our data certified a higher achievement of complete heartburn relief. The definition of resolution slightly differs in each report, and it should not be a numerical comparison.…”

“…A number of clinical trials have examined the efficacy of PPIs in GERD maintenance therapy, comparing different PPI doses and different PPIs; large-scale studies employing more >1,000 patients revealed that esomeprazole 20 mg was superior to other PPIs ( 29 31 ). During a period of 6 months, esomeprazole 20 mg once daily effectively maintained endoscopic and symptomatic remission (78.7–87.0%) in patients who had been successfully treated for RE ( 29 33 ).…”

“…Large-scale studies encompassing > 1,000 patients revealed that EPZ 20 mg was superior to other kinds of PPIs [32][33][34]. EPZ provides more sustained acid suppression [35] than LPZ [32] or pantoprazole [33], and this is reflected by higher rates of maintenance of RE healing and more rapid and greater acid suppression [36][37][38].…”
