“…The abdominal esophagus and the gastroesophageal junction are easily demonstrated by sonography through the acoustic window of the left lobe of the liver. Studies have shown that the normal abdominal esophagus 3 and many diseases of the gastroesophageal junction-including gastroesophageal reflux, 10,11 achalasia, 12,13 carcinoma, 2,4 esophageal varices, 14,15 hiatal hernia, 16,17 and leiomyoma 18 -are detectable by transabdominal sonography. Conventional sonography is increasingly used in the routine evaluation of the cervical esophagus.…”

“…Studies have shown that the normal abdominal esophagus [11] and many diseases of the gastroesophageal junction -including GER [12,13] , achalasia [14,15] , carcinoma [16,17] , esophageal varices [18,19] , hiatal hernia [20,21] and leiomyoma [22] -are detectable by transabdominal sonography. Conventional sonography is increasingly used in the routine evaluation of the cervical esophagus.…”

“…Moreover, in our experience and as per many published studies, portal vein (PV) pressure is not always correlated with PV diameter; the only method for evaluating PV pressure is by an intravascular invasive measure [4][5][6][7]. However, in our study we performed examination of the esophagi of 673 patients to demonstrate esophageal wall thicknesses, which was very helpful in evaluation of the degree of esophageal varices.…”
