Essential Oils from Humulus Lupulus scCO2 Extract by Hydrodistillation and Microwave-Assisted Hydrodistillation

Abstract: Two different extraction methods were used for a comparative study of essential oils obtained from the Humulus lupulus scCO2 (sc-supercritical) extract: microwave-assisted hydrodistillation (MAHD) and conventional hydrodistillation (HD). As a result, the best conditions for the maximum essential oil production were determined for the MAHD method at 335 W microwave power for 30 min at water to raw material ratio of 8:3. The obtained essential oils were enriched in β-myrcene in the amount of 74.13%–89.32% (wt%).… Show more

“…Traditional methods for extracting EOs are based on hydrodistillation (HD), steam distillation, and supercritical extraction (Jeyaratnam et al, 2016). Recently, microwave‐assisted extraction (MAE) has been proposed as an interesting green alternative to the conventional distillation in the isolation of herbal EOs, providing more effectiveness than other processes (Tyśkiewicz, Gieysztor, Konkol, Szałas, & Rój, 2018). Kahriman, Yayli, Yücel, Karaoglu, and Yayli (2012) compared the EOs composition of V. dadianorum extracted by both HD and MAE distillation (MD).…”

“…For water distillation, the modified Clevenger trap should be used to extract EO, and at the end the volume of the oil should be determined, and the EO should be analyzed immediately [43][44][45]. An advanced distillation method which is the microwave-assisted hydro-distillation can be used to shorten extraction time [46,47].…”

“…Humulene and myrcene are the most concentrated, therefore the ratio of both in the essential oil is an important quality feature characteristic of the variety. Humulene, is a naturally occurring monocyclic sesquiterpene (C 15 H 24 ) [20,21]. The α-humulene is a sesquiterpene with known anti-inflammatory activity [22,23].…”
