Plectranthus L′ Herit., is a complex genus of the family Lamiaceae (Labiatae) that contains about 300 species distributed in tropical Africa, Asia and Australia [1]. Taxonomically the genera Coleus and Plectranthus are recombined by the Japanese authors to the genus Plectranthus [2]. One of the most important species of this genus is Plectranthus barbatus Andr., which is commonly referred to by a number of synonyms such as Plectranthus forskohlii Briq, Plectranthus forskalaei Willd., Plectranthus kilimandschari (Gürke) H. L. Maass., Plectranthus grandis (Cramer) R. H. Willemse, Coleus forskohlii Briq., Coleus kilimandschari Gürke ex Engl., Coleus coerulescens Gürke, Coleus comosus A. Rich., and Coleus barbatus (Andr.) Benth [1]. Plectranthus barbatus grows perennially over the tropical and subtropical regions of the Indian subcontinent and is cultivated commercially for its use in pickles. It is also distributed over parts of Pakistan, Sri Lanka, tropical East Africa, Asia (South of Arabian Peninsula, China) and Brazil [3-5]. P. barbatus is one of the most commonly used medicinal species of the genus Plectranthus. A diversity of traditional medicinal uses of P. barbatus in India (Hindu and Ayurvedic medicine), East and Central Africa, China, and Brazil have been reported. The majority of uses are for intestinal disturbance and liver fatigue, respiratory disorders, heart diseases and certain central nervous system disorders [1, 3, 4, 6, 7]. P. barbatus root extracts, such as the 50% ethanolic and methanolic extracts were therefore, in the middle of the 1970s, independently involved in screening programs for biological activities such as cardiovascular properties in the Central Drug Research Institute (CDRI), Lucknow, India, and by the group at Hoechst India Limited in Bombay, India. Reports from both research groups revealed the hypotensive and antispasmodic effects of the root extracts as well as the isolation of the major active principle which was named coleonol by CDRI [

O gênero Plectranthus é considerado um dos mais ricos em óleos essenciais dentro da família Lamiaceae, compreendendo muitas espécies com propriedades medicinais. Algumas destas são conhecidas popularmente como boldo, as quais possuem semelhanças taxonômicas e diversas sinonímias, possuindo ações anti-dispépticas, analgésicas e digestivas. O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar quantitativa e qualitativamente os óleos essenciais presentes nas folhas das espécies P. amboinicus, P. barbatus, P. grandis e P. neochilus. A extração do óleo foi realizada por hidrodestilação, utilizando pentano como solvente extrator, repetida por três vezes para cada uma das espécies. A análise dos componentes dos óleos essenciais das quatro espécies de Plectranthus, através da CG/EM, permitiu identificar 14 componentes químicos, sendo a maioria sesquiterpenos. O trans-cariofileno se apresentou em elevada concentração nos óleos estudados. Alguns componentes químicos demonstraram ser específicos para cada espécie e outros apresentaram ocorrência comum a todas as quatro, possibilitando a diferenciação das mesmas em dois grupos, um formado por P. amboinicus e P. neochilus e o outro por P. grandis e P. barbatus. Conclui-se que as quatro espécies de boldo apresentam diferenças significativas quanto ao teor e à constituição química do óleo essencial

RESUMO: "Anatomia caulinar e foliar de Plectranthus neochilus Schltr., Lamiaceae". Plectranthus neochilus Schltr. é uma erva aromática denominada boldo ou "boldo-gambá" e empregada no tratamento de insufi ciência hepática e dispepsia na medicina popular. Este trabalho investigou a anatomia caulinar e foliar, com a fi nalidade de contribuir na identifi cação dessa planta medicinal. O material botânico foi preparado de acordo com microtécnicas usuais. O caule tem secção transversal quadrangular e, em crescimento secundário no nível analisado, exibe epiderme unisseriada e numerosos tricomas. Os tricomas glandulares são capitados e peltados. Os primeiros têm pedicelo curto e unicelular ou longo e pluricelular e cabeça uni ou bicelular. Os peltados apresentam pedicelo curto e cabeça ovóide com oito células. Os tricomas tectores são pluricelulares, unisseriados e recobertos com cutícula granulosa. Observam-se colênquima angular, câmbio vascular formando fl oema em direção centrífuga e xilema para o centro, e calotas de fi bras perivasculares apostas ao fl oema. A lâmina foliar tem epiderme uniestratifi cada revestida por cutícula estriada, estômatos diacíticos em ambas as superfícies, numerosos tricomas similares aos do caule e mesofi lo homogêneo. A nervura central possui um ou dois feixes vasculares colaterais e o pecíolo apresenta vários feixes colaterais em arco aberto. This paper has investigated its stem and leaf anatomy, in order to contribute for the medicinal plant identifi cation. The botanical material was prepared according to standard microtechniques. The stem has quadrangular transection and, in secondary growth at the level analyzed, shows uniseriate epidermis and numerous trichomes. The glandular ones are capitate and peltate. The former has short unicellular or long multicellular stalk and uni-or bicellular head. The latter presents short stalk and eight-celled ovoid head. The non-glandular trichomes are multicellular, uniseriate and coated with granular cuticle. It is observed angular collenchyma, cambia forming phloem outward and xylem inward, and perivascular fi ber caps next to the phloem. The blade has uniseriate epidermis coated with striate cuticle, diacytic stomata on both surfaces, numerous trichomes similar to the stem ones, and homogeneous mesophyll. The midrib shows one or two collateral bundles and the petiole has many of them distributed as an open arc.
