Establishing the pathways and indications for performing isotope bone scans in newly diagnosed intermediate‐risk localised prostate cancer – results from a large contemporaneous cohort

Abstract: This study confirms that a staging BS can be safely avoided in patients with intermediate-risk prostate cancer with Gleason primary pattern 3 and to limit performing BS in all high-risk prostate cancer and in the intermediate-risk group when the primary Gleason pattern is 4, thereby reinforcing the current recommendations of the EAU guidelines.

“…If cT staging is not available, an 'ir4' patient might benefit from a BS. 1 The subgroup analysis is conducted in line with the above notion, and it still shows a drop in the trend in performing BS for 'lr' and an increase in the 'ir4' and 'hr' groups. However, there is still considerable potential to reduce BS in 'ir3' patients, who constitute 40% of the proportion over the years.…”

“…These scans could be safely avoided in line with new evidence and guidelines. 1,3 The main limitation of this study is the completeness of data entry. There are a significant number of HR patients in this cohort for whom there is no mention of whether a BS was performed.…”
