“…Although several studies (10,(52)(53)(54)(55)(56)(57)(58)(59)(60) found stability in the mandible at a constant position at rest and recommended the use of this position for the determination of the OVD, many other studies (32,35,(61)(62)(63)(64)(65)(66)(67)(68)(69)(70)(71)(72)(73)(74)(75)(76) found a large variation and instability of the mandible at rest position and concluded against relying solely on physiologic rest position for the determination of the OVD. The physiologic rest position varies between individuals, from time to time in the same sitting and between sittings in the same patient, and between dental practitioners (8,32,62).…”

“…The vertical relation was estimated with a phonetic method as follows: two dots were marked on the patient's upper lip and chin. With the dentures in the mouth, the patient was asked to tone on the letter m. The distance between the two dots was measured to the nearest mm and the occlusion rims were trimmed to a vertical dimension 2 mm below the distance measured (Gillis, 1941). After that the patients were handed a mirror and asked if they were comfortable and satisfied with the face height and lip and cheek support.…”

“…The patient is instructed to close until he feels natural and comfortable. 2 The amount of FWS in any individual is mainly an expression of muscle function, its equilibrium, and gravity. When the tension created by the muscles of mastication that elevate the mandible above is in equilibrium with the tension of the musculature that depresses the mandible from below and gravity, then the mandible will be theoretically at rest.…”
