Estimated Water Flows in 2005: United States

Abstract: Flow charts depicting water use in the United States have been constructed from publicly available data and estimates of water use patterns. Approximately 410,500 million gallons per day of water are managed throughout the United States for use in farming, power production, residential, commercial, and industrial applications. Water is obtained from four major resource classes: fresh surface-water, saline (ocean) surface-water, fresh groundwater and saline (brackish) groundwater. Water that is not consumed or … Show more

“…Curmi et al [40] describe several developments of Sankey diagrams related to water and show results of a stochastic water model using this kind of diagram. Smith et al [41] produced a Sankey diagram of water flows in the economy for each state in the USA and Kumar et al [42] developed separate Sankey diagrams for water use and allocation.…”

“…Developed over 100 years ago by the Irish engineer Riall Sankey, these pipelike visualizations were originally used to reveal thermal efficiency of steam engines. Recently they have been applied to both energy and water flows and the balance among them for given time slices (Bauer, 2015;Smith, Belles, & Simon, 2011). The next two subsections provide a range of analytical methodologies for examining both component-level energy and water processes and systemlevel interaction among these components.…”

“…Colorado Water Conservation Board's 2017 map juxtaposes scaled arrows of stream flow for wet and dry yearsthough it does not provide a legend for the arrow widths as numeric quantities are annotated. Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory has produced a series of Sankey diagrams visualizing all water use for the nation and each state (Smith, Belles, & Simon, 2011), but their abstract accounting is entirely removed from the geographic and ecological context. Curmi et al (2013) covers the adoption of Sankey diagrams for visualizing the energy-water nexus for northern and central California and makes the case that Sankey diagrams are effective means to communicate with resource managers and policy makers.…”
