Estimates of genetic parameters for linear body measurements and prediction of body weight in goat

Abstract: The objective of this study is to estimate genetic parameters for linear body measurements along with their correlation to live weight with a focus on devising a scale to predict live weights from body measurement. A total of 142,564 records on body measures and live weights were collected from 8701 Jamunapari goats. Genetic parameters were obtained for body length (L), height at withers (H) and heart girth (G) from birth to adult stage by univariate and multivariate analysis using the average information rest… Show more

“…c. Shoulder Height (SH): Assessed as the distance from the highest point of the shoulder/spinous vertebrae thoracalis through the back of the elbow /olecranon, measured perpendicular to the ground (cm). d. Chest Circumference (CC): Measured right around the back of the elbow/lecranon (cm) [11,12]. e. Livestock Body Temperature (BT): Determined by inserting a thermometer into the anal opening (rectum) for approximately 1 minute.…”

“…Heart girth alone or combined with body length and wither height measurements in Malabari female adult goats predicted BW with good accuracy [ 16 ]. Genetic correlations of BW with length, heart girth, and wither height were high in Jamunapari goats, indicating the scope of genetic selection for higher BW using these linear body measurements [ 17 ]. Heart girth and length were found to be appropriate predictors of BW and selection indicators to improve genetic merit in BW of sheep and goats [ 1 , 10 , 18 ].…”
