Estimating Chikungunya prevalence in La Réunion Island outbreak by serosurveys: Two methods for two critical times of the epidemic

Abstract: BackgroundChikungunya virus (CHIKV) caused a major two-wave seventeen-month-long outbreak in La Réunion Island in 2005–2006. The aim of this study was to refine clinical estimates provided by a regional surveillance-system using a two-stage serological assessment as gold standard.MethodsTwo serosurveys were implemented: first, a rapid survey using stored sera of pregnant women, in order to assess the attack rate at the epidemic upsurge (s1, February 2006; n = 888); second, a population-based survey among a ran… Show more

“…Although the focus of our analysis was on Latin America and the Caribbean, we were not able to exclude locations on the basis of location given that only 2 of 13 came from the focal region. Appropriately, however, a number of the seroprevalence estimates we obtained pertained specifically to pregnant women, although there did not appear to be differences in the seroprevalence of pregnant women and the population at large, at least in the context of a naive population following an outbreak 36 .…”

“…[12][13][14] However, the seroprevalence studies done in these territories have shown large variations between regions in the prevalence rate. 15 It was 38.2% in La Reunion Island and 63% in Grande Comore Island. 13,15 The current serosurvey was conducted at the end of outbreak, avoiding the risk of underestimating the number of cases that might occur if serosurveys are conducted during epidemic.…”

“…Prevalence of the disease on the Islands as well as the prevalence among pregnant women were of special interest. In July of 2006, the prevalence rate in the Réunion was found to be 34.3%, which was determined by a regional surveillance-system managed by the Cellule Interrégionale d'Epidémiologie (CIRE) (40).…”
