This study examined the marketing of Irvingia seeds (ogbono) in Enugu state, Nigeria, especially as it concerns margins, structure and causality as well as price transmission tests. Primary data were collected from 180 respondents composed of 36 producers, 54 wholesalers and 90 retailers. Data were analysed with descriptive and inferential statistical tools including the Gini coefficient. Irvingia seed marketing margins were generally high, apparently due to poor socioeconomic environments of the actors. The margins were, however, on the average, lower than the producer's share of the consumer spending. The result of the analysis also suggests a competitive market structure for Irvingia seed in the study area. Prices were determined at the production level of the chain, but producers were asymmetric in their price transmissions to the wholesale level. These observations suggest that policy intervention in the form of improving the socioeconomic environment under which marketing agents operate and facilitation of market information flow (which could reduce the asymmetric behaviour of producers) could improve Irvingia seed marketing in the study area.

An important factor in determining the success of a small-scale broiler farm is its economic viability and efficiency. During times of trouble for the industry, the idea receives more attention. The conceptual considerations of economic sustainability and efficiency are frequently quite constrained, according to the difficulties raised in this study and by other authors. There is a lack of information about South Africa's small-scale broiler production's economic viability and effectiveness. Furthermore, it is clear that small-scale broiler producers have the ability to increase their economic efficiency. By reducing the mortality rate, feed conversion rate, and production duration, both their technical and financial efficiency could be improved. Profitability in the production of broilers will be considerably increased by lowering the cost of these variable inputs, particularly feed and day-old chicks. Additionally, raising the education level, capacity utilization ratio, and broiler production would all contribute to raising the farms' efficiency levels. To ensure effective resource use and to maximize practicable profit, small-scale broiler producers who are not operating close to the profit frontier must make efforts to reduce both technical and allocation inefficiencies. Collectively, all these measures would ensure the economic sustainability of small-scale farmers in South Africa would be met. Moreover, the sustainability of small-scale broiler producers can be achieved if strategies that build local capacity and that empower them to sustain high levels of productivity are provided. In addition, the efficient use of resources will ensure that productivity is enhanced, and might increase profitability. It is therefore important to ensure that small-scale broiler producers achieve maximum profit for a given set of inputs. Approaches in assessing the farm-level profitability such as cost-benefit and gross margin analyses can be used.

Bu araştırmanın temel amacı, Türkiye'de TR83 bölgesinde buğday tohumluğu yetiştiriciliğinde teknik etkinliği ölçmek ve teknik etkinliği belirleyen faktörleri ortaya koymaktır. Araştırma verileri buğday tohumluğu yetiştiren işletmelerin tamamı olan 72 tarım işletmesinden anket yoluyla toplanmıştır. İncelenen işletmelerin ekonomik analizinde klasik ekonomik analiz yaklaşımları kullanılmıştır. İşletme düzeyinde teknik etkinliğin ölçülmesinde ve etkinliği belirleyen faktörlerin ortaya konulmasında stokastik sınır modelinden yararlanılmıştır. Etkinlik analizi sonuçları inceleme alanında teknik etkinliğin 0.68 ile 0.96 arasında değiştiğini ve ortalama 0.81 olduğunu göstermiştir. İncelenen işletmeler teknik yetersizliklerini ortadan kaldırarak, üretim miktarında hiçbir azalma olmaksızın kullandıkları girdi miktarlarını % 19 oranında azaltabileceklerdir. Buğday tohumluğu yetiştiriciliğinde tohum, gübre ve işgücü dışında kalan diğer değişken masrafların gereğinden fazla olduğu ve bunun teknik etkinliği düşürdüğü saptanmıştır. Eğitim, kayıt tutma durumu, aile büyüklüğü ve tohumluk üretimine tahsis edilen alan değişkenlerinin buğday tohumluğu üretim etkinliğini belirleyen önemli değişkenler olduğu tespit edilmiştir. İncelenen işletmelerde kullanılan tohum miktarını ve diğer değişken masrafların hemen hemen tamamını tohumluk yetiştiren işletmeyle sözleşme yapan tohum üretici firmalar belirlediğinden, tohum yetiştiren firmaların tohumluk yetiştiriciliğiyle ilgili teknik uygulamaları gözden geçirmesi ve daha doğru olan uygulamaların işletmeler tarafından uygulanmasını sağlamaları buğday tohumluğu yetiştiriciliğinde teknik etkinliği artırabilecektir.Assesing the technical efficiency of farms producing wheat seed and its determinants in TR83 region, Turkey Anahtar Sözcükler: Buğday tohumluğu TR83 Bölgesi Stokastik sınır modeli Teknik etkinlik ABSTRACT The main objectives of this study were to evaluate the technical efficiency in wheat seed growing and to determine the factors affecting technical efficiency in TR83 region of Turkey. Data were collected from 72 wheat seed-growing farms by using questionnaire. Conventional economic analysis approaches were used for the economic analysis of the farms surveyed. Stochastic Frontier Analysis (SFA) was used to assess the technical efficiency at farm level and to estimate the parameters affecting technical efficiency. The results of efficiency analysis revealed that technical efficiency in the study area ranged from 0.68 to 0.96 (mean 0.81). By eliminating the technical inefficiency, the sample farms will be able to reduce their amount of input use with a rate of 19 % without any reduction in the amount of production. It was determined that other variable costs except for seed, fertilizer and labor in wheat seed growing were redundant, and this resulted in decreasing the technical efficiency.
