Estimation and forecasting of ecological efficiency of virtual machines

Abstract: The massive development of the cloud marketplace is leading to an increase in the number of the Data Centers (DCs) globally and eventually to an increase of the CO 2 related footprint. The calculation of the impact of Virtual Machines (VMs) on the environment is a challenging task, not only due to the technical difficulties but also due to the lack of information from the energy providers. The ecological efficiency of a system captures the relationship between the performance of the system with its environment… Show more

“…Meanwhile, ecological efficiency is introduced to comprehensively evaluate the effect of industrial transformation, due to its advantage of linking social, economic, and environmental factors [1], which is right accordant with the requirement of evaluating the effect of industrial transformation. Although there are a number of studies on ecological efficiency at the scale of nation, region, enterprise, and product [2][3][4][5][6][7], it still lacks that at the industrial scale, especially from the perspective of industrial transformation. Therefore, the concept of ecological efficiency is introduced in this paper, as an attempt to comprehensively evaluate the effect of urban industrial transformation, by checking and analyzing the dynamic change of ecological efficiency during the process of industrial transformation.…”
