Estimation of leaf number and leaf area of hydroponic pak-choi plants (Brassica campestns ssp, chinensis) using growing degree-days

Abstract: Temperature is a principal environmental factor that directly affects the growth and timing of appearance for crop leaves. To estimate the leaf number and leaf area of 'Seoul' pak-choi plants (Brassica campestris ssp. chinensis), we applied the concept of growing degree-days {GDD = (Tavg-Tbase)X days), where Tavg , Tbase, and days were the daily average air temperature, base temperature, and days after transplanting, respectively. Leaves that were beginning to unfold with a leaf area >1 cm 2 were counted every… Show more

“…Whereas the minimum plant height was found to be in Baby Pak Choi (8.80 cm), Hong Tae (14.07 cm) and Purple Lady Pak Choi (16.87 cm). There are several reports indicating variation with respect to plant height by several workers, Funda [8], Cho et al, [9], Purbajanti et al [10] and Ansari et al, (2018).…”

“…Non-destructive leaf area measurement could be applied for a wide range of plants [42]. Leaf area estimation has been done in some species of the Brassicaceae family, i.e., pakchoi (B. campestris) [43], rapeseed (B. napus) [44], red cabbage (B. oleracea var. capitata), cabbage (B. oleracea var.…”
