Estimation of lunar titanium content: Based on absorption features of Chang’E-1 interference imaging spectrometer (IIM)

Abstract: Two linear regression models based on absorption features extracted from CE-1 IIM image data are presented to discuss the relationship between absorption features and titanium content. We computed five absorption parameters (Full Wave at Half Maximum (FWHM), absorption position, absorption area, absorption depth and absorption asymmetry) of the spectra collected at Apollo 17 landing sites to build two regression models, one with FWHM and the other without FWHM due to the low relation coefficient between FWHM a… Show more

“…the bombarding of lunar soil by micrometeorites, solar wind, and galactic cosmic rays, which act to produce agglutinates and nanophase iron [18,36]. Therefore, unlike Liu et al, who used the absorption feature of ilmenite in their Ti calculations [21], we used a Ti-sensitive parameter to suppress the space weathering effect in our calculations. Owing to the limited response of the CCD detector, the first five spectral channels of the IIM are of poor quality (i.e.…”

“…We have derived the FeO model and examined its potential for iron mapping using IIM data [12]. Liu et al used two linear regression models to predict Ti content from absorption features extracted from IIM data for the region near the Apollo 17 landing site [21]. In this paper, we develop a new algorithm to map TiO 2 abundance using Chang'E-1 IIM data, and then validate the results for several typical regions with Clementine UVVIS-derived TiO 2 data.…”

“…So for credibility of comparing the spectral consistency of the three methods, the spectral intensity is calibrated with modeled spectra. The reflectance spectra of Apollo 16 sample 62231 has been extensively used as an optical standard for the calibration of lunar remote sensing data including the Clementine UVVIS, Kaguya MI and Chandrayaan-1 M 3 [5]. The radiometric calibration is conducted as follows: (a) An calibration area which is near sample 62231 was chosen in IIM Orbit 2225 containing 5×18 pixels (sample: 124-128; line: 11117-11134).…”

“…Imaging Interferometer (IIM), as one of the eight scientific payloads embarked on Chang'e-1, is a Fourier transform Sagnac-based imaging spectrometer with goals to analyze and map the abundance and distribution of various chemical elements on the lunar surface [1]. IIM data has already shown its potentials in lunar elemental mappings and geologic studies [2][3][4][5][6]. However, IIM's spectral data suffers from several degradation problems.…”

“…Various methods have been adopted to adjust the IIM data for estimating the contents of iron, titanium and other elements [51][52][53][54][55]. The data processing procedure usually removes bad lines, bad points, stripes and flat field effects to impact the calibration.…”
