Estimation of plasma properties using an extended Kalman filter with plasma global models

Abstract: A physically-constrained extended Kalman filter (EKF) is applied to various zero-dimensional global models for the estimation of plasma properties using time-dependent experimental data such as the plasma density or ion flux. The capability of the EKF is demonstrated to estimate unknown system states simultaneously, such as reaction rate coefficients and the absorbed electron input power, which can be difficult, if not impossible, to measure experimentally. Global models accounting for pure argon reactions and… Show more

“…model-data fusion). Greve et al [24,25] recently showed the capability of the PC-EKF to dynamically estimate the ion and neutral number densities and electron temperature based on the ionization oscillation theory of [26]. The present work extends the PC-EKF by including the electron energy equation and taking the electron bulk velocity into account, enabling dynamic estimation of the anomalous electron scattering frequency.…”

“…This may enable data-driven MPC with limited observables (cf. also PC-EKF 150,151 ). In addition, MPC schemes based on LSTM networks that have been successfully demonstrated in magnetic confinement fusion plasmas subject to inherent complex nonlinear dynamics by Degrave et al 194 may be promising candidates for adaptation in LTP processing.…”

“…The proposed scheme has been argued to benefit from improved robustness with the ability to estimate low-frequency dynamics in the presence of possibly not well resolved high-frequency dynamics (in the model or experiments). In a follow-up study also by Greve et al., 151 the PC-EKF approach was generalized to more complex Ar and Ar/normalO2 chemical reaction sets and global models of ICP sources. Particle balance equations as well as a power balance equation for electrons were taken into account.…”
