Estimation of Solid Medical Waste Production and Environmental Impact Analysis in the Context of COVID-19: A Case Study of Hubei Province in China

Abstract: COVID-19 greatly challenges human beings in the health sector and leaves behind a large amount of medical waste that poses many potential threats to the environment. In this paper, we compiled relevant data released by official agencies and the media, and conducted data supplementation based on previous studies to calculate the net value of medical waste production in Hubei Province during COVID-19 with the help of a neural network model. Then, we reviewed the data related to the environmental impact of medica… Show more

“…Various studies have scrutinized issues pertaining to the formulation and execution of pandemic prevention protocols. these measures may have inadvertently exacerbated a "digital divide," stemming from a lack of consideration for the specific requirements of the elderly [9]. In contrast, older individuals in rural settings, recognized as a vulnerable group, demonstrated distinct media usage patterns and protective behaviours during the COVID-19 pandemic [3].…”

“…According to Song et al [15], COVID-19 threatens human health and produces a large amount of MW dangerous for the environment. In the Hubei Province, during COVID-19, a calculation was made of the MW production (MWP) rate using a neural network model, related to the environmental impact, resulting in four scenarios for the estimation of the environmental impact of new MW generated during the pandemic with a volume of approximately 3367 tons.…”

“…According to Song et al (2021), COVID-19 and produces a large amount of MW dangerous for the human health and environment. In Hubei Province during COVID-19, the MW production rate has been estimated using a neural network model; when related to the environmental impact, scenarios emerged resulting in four scenarios for the estimation of the environmental impact of new MW generated during the pandemic with a volume of about 3367 tons when treated with four different MWTT (incineration etc.).…”
