The purpose of this study was to determine if an association exists between tongue strength and lower muscle strength, and skeletal muscle mass, in Taekwondo athletes. In this cross-sectional study, a total of 35 young adults aged ≥ 19 (14 women and 21 men) gave their written informed consent to participate. A bio-impedance body composition analyser determined body fat percentage, skeletal muscle mass, and other body composition values. A hand-held dynamometer was used to evaluate quadriceps lower muscle strength. Tongue strength was assessed by measuring maximal tongue pressure against a tongue depressor connected to a strain gauge dynamometer. Partial correlation coefficients for tongue strength significantly correlated with skeletal muscle mass (r=0.518, P=0.001), grip strength (r=0.460, P=0.005), and lower muscle strength (r=0.487, P=0.003). However, tongue strength was inversely correlated with flexibility (r=-0.406, P=0.016). After adjusting for sex, tongue strength remained significantly correlated with skeletal muscle mass (r=0.345, P=0.045), and lower muscle strength (r=0.346, P=0.045). This crosssectional study is the first to report the association between tongue strength and grip strength, lower muscle strength, and skeletal muscle mass, in Taekwondo athletes. Our data suggests that the measurement of tongue strength may provide a new approach to determining muscle strength.

Background: Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative condition that exerts a negative influence on postural control and mobility, predominantly among older adults, affecting mobility and increasing the risk of slipping, tripping and falls. Objectives: Determine the effectiveness of gait training with the aid of virtual reality on balance and gait in comparison to treadmill training and conventional gait training for subjects with PD. Methods/design: A prospective, randomized, controlled blind, clinical trial is proposed. The sample will comprise 45 individuals with Parkinson's disease randomly allocated to three groups (Control: conventional gait training; Experimental I: treadmill training; and Experimental II: gait training involving virtual reality). Evaluations will be conducted on four occasions: 1) pre-intervention; 2) immediately after one session; 3) post-intervention; and 4) one month after last session. The evaluations will involve the Berg Balance Scale, Tinetti Test, Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale and Hoehn and Yahr Scale. The G-WALK (BTS) inertial sensor will be used for the evaluation of spatiotemporal gait variables, the Timed Up and Go test and the Six-Minute Walk Test. Training will involve 20-minute sessions held three times per week for four consecutive weeks. The results will be analyzed statistically by two-way ANOVA for the data with parametric distribution or Friedman's two-way ANOVA for non-parametric data (α<0.05). Conclusion:The proposed study will compare gait conventional training, treadmill training and training with virtual reality with regard to improvements in gait and balance in patients with PD. The results will be published and will contribute evidence on the use of these interventions for individuals with PD.

Influence of Preoperative Physical Function on Gait 1 Month After Total Knee Arthroplasty

Background: This study aimed to identify the preoperative physical performance factors that predict gait speed and endurance 1 month after total knee arthroplasty (TKA). Methods: This prospective cohort study included all patients who underwent unilateral primary TKA in December 2014-2016. Before and at 1 month after TKA, gait variables, bilateral isometric knee extensor and flexor strength, and range of motion (ROM) (flexion and extension) of the operated knee were measured; further, a 6-minute walk test (6MWT), a Timed Up and Go (TUG) test, and a stair-climbing test (SCT) were conducted. The Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC), the EuroQoL 5-dimension (EQ-5D) questionnaire, and the visual analogue scale (VAS) of knee pain were also completed. Results: A total of 84 patients were included. Bivariate analyses showed that postoperative gait speed significantly and positively correlated with preoperative gait speed, gait cadence, ROM of knee flexion, and 6MWT, but significantly and negatively correlated with age and preoperative TUG test, SCT-descent, WOMAC-Function score, and VAS score. The postoperative 6MWT significantly and positively correlated with preoperative gait cadence and 6MWT, but significantly and negatively with preoperative body mass index (BMI), TUG test, SCT-ascent, and WOMAC-Function score. Linear regression analyses showed that age, preoperative ROM of knee flexion, and TUG test were independent predictors of postoperative gait speed, while preoperative BMI and 6MWT predicted postoperative 6MWT. Conclusion: These preoperative predictive factors will be useful in developing pre-and postoperative rehabilitation strategies aimed at improving gait function in the early stages after TKA.
