Show more

“…Hereafter, this will be referred to as T1 to T6 plants, respectively. Salt solutions was prepared with 1 M of NaCl, CaCl 2 2 H 2 O, and MgCl 2 6 H 2 O, considering the ratio 7:2:1 for Na:Ca:Mg described in Gurgel et al (2003), as an approximation that represents the majority of available water sources for irrigating semiarid Northeastern Brazil. During the experimental period, maximum photosynthetic photon flux (PPF) reached more than 2,000 μmol m -2 s -1 .…”

“…It is noted that plants subjected to the treatment S 1 (control -ECw of 0.5 dS m -1 ) increased the rate of A by 9.09 μmol m -2 s -1 in relation to plants cultivated under irrigation with water of different ionic composition,S 2 ; S 3 ; S 4 and S 5 (Na + ; Ca 2+ ; K + and Na + +Ca 2+ +Mg 2+ ) and ECw of 5.0 dS m -1 . The high saline concentration of the irrigation water causes reduction in the water potential of the soil and, as a consequence, the stomata close, thus reflecting in low CO 2 assimilation rate (Gurgel et al, 2003).This decline in the CO 2 assimilation rate of sunflower plants is also related to the damage in the photosynthetic apparatus and /or in the enzymatic system of CO 2 fixation (Kurban et al, 1999), due to the irrigation with water of different cationic nature and by the variation in ECw levels. Similar results were also verified in cotton (Meloni et al, 2003) and jatropha (Sousa et al, 2012b).…”
