Estrogen‐like activity and prevention effect of bone loss in calcium deficient ovariectomized rats by the extract of Pleurotus eryngii

Abstract: In the course of a search for natural estrogen-like materials from mushrooms, the proliferating effects of the methanol extracts of 14 edible mushrooms on the estrogen-dependent growth of MCF-7 cells were examined. Of the extracts, that from the fruiting body of Pleurotus eryngii showed the strongest estrogen-like activity, specifically on the proliferating effects of MCF-7 cells. This proliferation effect of the extract from the fruiting body of P. eryngii is related to its estrogenic activity, because this p… Show more

“…In vivo studies, using rats with ovariectomy-induced osteoporosis revealed that PEX alleviated a decrease in the trabecular bone mineral density ). An ethanol extract of P. eryngii was also reported to help protect against bone loss caused by estrogen deficiency, without having a substantial effect on the uterus (Shimizu et al, 2006), and osteoclast forming suppressive compounds have been isolated from the mushroom Agrocybe chaxingu (Abel et al, 2007).…”

“…9) Shimizu et al reported that the ethanol extract of P. eryngii contains estrogen-like compounds that protect against bone loss caused by estrogen deficiency. 10) In the present study, we investigated the effect of estrogen-like compounds contained in P. eryngii on depression-like behavior and memory impairment in ovariectomized (OVX) rats.…”

“…P. eryngii produced several biological active compounds such as β-1,3-glucans, lovastatin, pleureryn, eryngin, ribonuclease, 17β-estradiol, eryngeolysin, ergothioneine and protein xb68AB. 9) These compounds from P. eryngii have been reported to show various medicinal effects including immune modulation, anti-tumor, anti-infection and anti-osteoporosis effects. 9) Shimizu et al reported that the ethanol extract of P. eryngii contains estrogen-like compounds that protect against bone loss caused by estrogen deficiency.…”
