Coastal turbidity maxima (CTMs) have been recognized on open coastal seas with elevated suspended sediment concentrations. Tidal pumping is often considered the major contributor to turbidity maxima in well‐mixed estuaries. However, its role in CTM formation on well‐mixed coasts remains unclear. Here, we propose a two‐dimensional depth‐averaged analytical model to explore residual sediment transport influenced by interactions between cross‐shore and along‐shore tidal currents. Observation data collected on the well‐mixed central Jiangsu coast (southern Yellow Sea), China, are analyzed by the model. The results display a persistent CTM close to the shore and show that the large along‐shore tidal velocity strongly influences the cross‐shore tidal pumping flux. The model calculation presents landward tidal pumping flux under horizontally homogeneous bed sediment distribution, illustrating the dominant role of tidal pumping in CTM formation within well‐mixed coastal water bodies. The model suggests that the significance of alongshore tidal current to cross‐shore sediment transport should be addressed in similar coastal environments.

Tidal flat variations (curvature) in macro‐tidal turbid bays highly correlate with sediment dynamics. Interactions between tidal flats and sediment dynamics in macro‐tidal turbid estuaries, like Hangzhou Bay, China, have been studied through a fully validated 3D sediment model by considering high‐turbidity, flocculation, and water‐sediment density coupling. Numerical results show that the circulation and sediment flux in the curvature of Andong tidal flat have similar magnitudes in the along‐estuarine and lateral directions, demonstrating the important impact of the geometry on hydrodynamics and sediment transport processes. Sediment moves toward the southern/northern bank near the bottom/surface level in curvature. Tidally averaged net sediment flux is southward in the curvature. Tidal flat reclamation changes the curvature of the tidal channel, and modulates the circulation and sediment transport, and then feeds back to the tidal flat evolution subsequently. Bottom friction, nonlinear advection, and centrifugal force are dominant forces for inducing the lateral circulation, followed by the Coriolis force and sediment‐induced baroclinic process. Lateral circulation combined with the suspended sediment concentration (SSC) profile controls the distribution of instantaneous and tidally averaged net sediment fluxes in the curvature. The sediment flux positively correlates with the curvature of channel bends. The increased curvature of channel bends enhances the southward sediment fluxes mainly by increasing the effects of the centrifugal force, nonlinear advection, and Coriolis force on the lateral circulation and SSC. This study revealed a two‐way feedback system between tidal flat and sediment dynamics, which contributes to the impact of anthropogenic activities on geomorphological evolution of similar estuaries worldwide.

River effects on sea-level rise in the Río de la Plata during the past century

Identifying the causes for historical sea-level changes in coastal tide-gauge records is important for constraining oceanographic, geologic, and climatic processes. The Río de la Plata estuary in South America features the longest tide-gauge records in the South Atlantic. Despite the relevance of these data for large-scale circulation and climate studies, the mechanisms underlying relative sea-level changes in this region during the past century have not been firmly established. I study annual data from tide gauges in the Río de la Plata and stream gauges along the Río Paraná and Río Uruguay to establish relationships between river streamflow and sea level over 1931-2014. Regression analysis suggests that streamflow explains 59%+/-17% of the total sea-level variance at Buenos Aires, Argentina, and 28%+/-21% at Montevideo, Uruguay (95% confidence intervals). A longterm streamflow increase effected sea-level trends of 0.71+/-0.35 mm/yr at Buenos Aires and 0.48+/-0.38 mm/yr at Montevideo. More generally, sea level at Buenos Aires and Montevideo respectively rises by (7.3+/-1.8)x10ˆ-6 m and (4.7+/-2.6)x10ˆ-6 m per 1 mˆ3 sˆ-1 streamflow increase. These observational results are consistent with simple theories for the coastal sea-level response to streamflow forcing, suggesting a causal relationship between streamflow and sea level mediated by ocean dynamics. Findings advance understanding of local, regional, and global sea-level changes, clarify sea-level physics, inform future projections of coastal sea level and the interpretation of satellite data and proxy reconstructions, and highlight future research directions.
