Ethnobotanical Uses, Phytochemical Composition, Biosynthesis, and Pharmacological Activities of Carpesium abrotanoides L. (Asteraceae)

Abstract: Carpesium abrotanoides L. (Asteraceae) is a medicinal plant with immense therapeutic importance and bioactivities. It is commonly encountered in various Asian regions. It has numerous ethnomedicinal uses for curing diverse ailments such as toothache, stomach ulcer, boils, tonsillitis, bronchitis, bacterial infection, bruises, swelling, virus infection, fever, and amygdalitis, as well as an anthelmintic versus round-, tape-, hook-, and pinworms. Different classes of phytoconstituents such as sesquiterpenes, ses… Show more

“…Collectively, the antifungal activities of the four different solvent extracts were weak against G. cigulata, V. dahlia, T. cucumeris and B. cinerea. Although C. abrotanoides extracts and phytoconstituents have been studied [6,[23][24][25][26] , their antifungal effects on phytopathogenic fungi in agriculture are lacking. Here, the ower, leaf and seed extracts of this plant exhibited broad spectrum antifungal activities, especially against G. zeae, P. capsica and R. cerealis.…”

“…Many compounds have been identi ed in this plant by researchers and utilized as potential drug ingredients. These compounds, mainly sesquiterpenes, sesquiterpene dimers, monoterpenes and nitrogenous compounds, possess diverse pharmacological properties, including cytotoxic, antiparasitic, insecticidal, antidiabetic, antioxidant and anti-in ammatory activities [6] . For example, from the C. abrotanoides fruit's MeOH extract, 2,5-dihydroxy-p-menthane, a monoterpene, has been separated and had antifeedant effectiveness versus Plutella xylostella third-instar larvae (EC 50 , 43.99 mg/L) [3] .…”

“…First, the constituents in CFE were identified using UHPLC‐DAD‐Q/TOF‐MS/MS. Figure S1 and Table S1 show that 17 main constituents were characterized based on the literature 35 and the Dictionary of Natural Products (DNP) database, accessible at https://dnp.chemnetbase.com . After examining the cytotoxicity of CFE and H 2 O 2 in PC‐12 cells (Figure 1B and S2 ), we investigated the effect of CFE at concentrations of 50–100 μg/mL on the inhibition of H 2 O 2 ‐induced cell death.…”

“…Sesquiterpene lactones, including over 5,000 known compounds, have promising bioactivities [28] . Ibrahim et al summarized more than 100 compounds separated from different parts of C. abrotanoides, and they mainly comprised monoterpenes and sesquiterpenes [6] . Eight compounds identi ed having various structures were reported to have antibacterial, insecticidal, anti-in ammatory and anti-tumor activities [29][30][31][32][33][34][35] .…”
