Etiologic Factors in Ulcerative Colitis: Birth, Death and Symbolic Equivalents

Abstract: The incidence of life crises occurring prior to the onset of symptoms was documented in fifty patients with ulcerative colitis and was found to be significantly higher in the patient group than in a matched group of normal control subjects. The gain or loss of psychic object to the individual patient has been emphasized as relevant in the etiology of this illness. Birth and death–actual, threatened, symbolic or fantasied-occurring within the previous twelve months preceded illness onset in 94 per cent of cases. Show more

Such studies also examined the effects by the disease on patients’ psychological state.…”

“…Evidence for the impact of either a "premorbid pessimistic" attitude or an outlook of "future despair" on physical disease seems well established. This constellation is in no way illness specific, however; there are studies showing its relationship to a wide variety of diseases such as multiple sclerosis, ulcerative colitis, and cancer (Mei-Tal, Meyerowitz, & Engel, 1970;Paull & Hislop, 1974;Schmale, 1972). This depressive pattern has also been researched in relation to postoperative course; a good surgical outcome seems to be correlated with an acceptance of one's health problems and a positive, future-oriented attitude (Boyd, Yeager, & McMillan, 1973).…”
