Etiologic Relationships Between Anxiety and Dimensions of Maladaptive Perfectionismin Young Adult Female Twins

Abstract: This is the first study to demonstrate the role of genetic factors in the relationship between anxiety and maladaptive perfectionism. Future studies are needed to uncover the specific biologic and genetic factors that contribute to this relationship and to evaluate whether maladaptive perfectionism represents an intermediate trait or risk factor for anxiety.

“…The first is to examine predictors of eating pathology and antisocial behavior and sex differences in etiologic influences on these and related phenotypes. Several papers addressing this aim have already been published (Culbert et al, 2008; Donnellan et al, 2008; Eggert et al, 2007; Gobrogge et al, 2008; Harrell et al, 2009; Hopwood et al, in press; Klump et al, 2008; Klump et al, in press; Moore et al, 2011a, 2011b; Moser et al, 2012; Racine et al, 2011, 2012; Slane et al, 2010, 2011, 2012; Spanos et al, 2010; Suisman et al, in press), with more underway.…”

“…This maladaptive style of functioning is related to many problems in everyday life. OCPD can be linked with other mental health disabilities such as eating disorders (Watson, Raykos, Street, Fursland, & Nathan, 2011), depression and anxiety (Moser, Slane, Burt, & Klump, 2012), and completed suicide in men (Schneider et al, 2006). The dysfunctional lifestyle among people with OCPD is very often at the expense of flexibility, openness and efficiency (Colman, 2009) as well as interpersonal relations (Cain, Ansell, Simpson, & Pinto, 2015).…”

“…Furthermore, the features of OCPD are broadly relevant to psychopathology. For example, a core feature of OCPD is perfectionism, which is linked to variety of other problems such as eating disorders (Watson, Raykos, Street, Fursland, & Nathan, 2011), depression and anxiety (Moser, Slane, Burt, & Klump, 2012), and has been offered as a transdiagnostic process (Egan, Wade, & Shafran, 2011). Thus, the availability of relatively brief, faceted measures of the specific aspects of OCPD, potentially with unique connections to relevant outcomes, would be quite valuable to research and clinical practice.…”
