Eukaryo: An AR and VR Application for Cell Biology

Abstract: Eukaryo is a simulated bio-molecular world that allows users to explore the complex environment within a biological cell. Eukaryo was developed using Unity, leveraging the capabilities and high performance of a commercial game engine. Through the use of MiddleVR, our tool can support a wide variety of interaction platforms including 3D virtual reality (VR) environments, such as head-mounted displays, augmented reality (AR) headsets, and large scale immersive visualization facilities. Our interactive, 3-dimensi… Show more

“…Among the physically inaccurate solutions we can list Molecular Zoo [GBS*18], which simulates interactions between molecules that are freely moving in the space around the user. The notion of random movement within the crowded molecular environments can be also achieved using particle effects [YCJ16]. Finally, users are sometimes encouraged to interact with the environment directly to influence the simulations of dynamic processes [OBD*19, PLAM19, vWGK22].…”

“…Finally, although there are not many, there are also AR applications developed specifically for biology concepts. One of them is Eukaryo (Yuen et al, 2016), a simulated biomolecular world that enables users to explore the complex environment within a biological cell. Users could also use multiple modes to explore the cell, its structural elements, organelles, and some key metabolic processes.…”

“…In our knowledge, not much of the VR application available specifically for human cell division, as most of them focus on the human anatomy topic in general such as the AnatomyouVR and INVIVO Bloodstream Explorer VR. One interesting VR application that worth to be mentioned is the Eukaryo which is a multi-reality (both AR and VR) application that allows learners to explore the complex environment within a biological cell [19].…”
