Evaluating Cultural Ecosystem Services of Urban Residential Green Spaces From the Perspective of Residents' Satisfaction With Green Space

Abstract: Green spaces in residential areas provide multiple cultural ecosystem services (CES), which can contribute to human health by increasing the frequency of residents' visits. We evaluated the CES of residential green spaces by assessing residents' satisfaction with these spaces in the city of Zhengzhou, China. The data reveal the supply capacity of CES in residential green spaces: the results suggest that the level of recreational services is low, whereas the residents' satisfaction with the sense of place and n… Show more

“…Temperature regulation is also included because the extreme heat has adverse effects on human health around the world [35], and the problem is even more serious due to the temperature inversion effect in mountainous cities [52]. (3) Cultural services are reflected by the recreation services of green spaces [10,[53][54][55]. Nature-based recreation is an important function of ecosystems since it benefits people in many ways-such as increasing aesthetic experience [56], improving physical and mental health [57], and enhancing social cohesion [58].…”

“…As important bridges linking natural environment and human societies, ecosystem services (ES) refers to the structures and functions for human well-being [1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8]. In many cities, urban greenspace (UGS) provides major ecosystem services for human societies [9][10][11]. Rapid urbanization has brought large-scale changes of urban greenspaces, which has led to the imbalances of supply and demand of ecosystem services in urban areas [12,13].…”

“…Green spaces are critical pieces of urban green infrastructure [4,5] that improve urban environmental quality and human health and reduce the burden on existing grey infrastructure, such as stormwater drains [6][7][8][9]. By providing vegetated habitat [2,10,11], they positively contribute to ecosystem services, such as climate regulation, purification, species maintenance, and provide opportunities for people to connect with nature [12][13][14][15][16][17][18][19]. Though the habitats may be highly modified, urban green spaces containing some of the Indigenous habitat characteristics can be considered analogous habitats for some species and can facilitate their survival in the novel ecosystems of cities [20].…”
