Evaluating health risks from occupational exposure to pesticides and the regulatory response.

Abstract: In this study, we used measurements of occupational exposures to pesticides in agriculture to evaluate health risks and analyzed how the federal regulatory program is addressing these risks. Dose estimates developed by the State of California from measured occupational exposures to 41 pesticides were compared to standard indices of acute toxicity (LD50) and chronic effects (reference dose). Lifetime cancer risks were estimated using cancer potencies. Estimated absorbed daily doses for mixers, loaders, and appl… Show more

“…For most pesticides, using protective measures results in a decrease of exposure to pesticides. Similar reductions are seen for farm workers using gloves compared to those not using gloves [33]. In a similar study in India, unsafe practices among pesticide users was also reported [34].…”

“…Because of high biological activity, and, in some cases, long persistence in the environment, pesticides may cause harmful effects to human health and to the environment [ 6 ]. Improper handling may result in severe acute poisonings; in some cases, adverse health effects may also result from long-term, low-level exposures [ 7 ]. As a result of widespread diffusion of pesticides, a great part of the population may be exposed to pesticides due to occupation.…”

“…Consequently, they were at increased risk of the health hazards associated with pesticide exposure. It was reported that the use of gloves reduced exposure to pesticides in farm workers compared to workers that did not use gloves (Woodruff et al, 1994). The use of different protective measures decreases the risk of health hazards associated with pesticide use.…”
