Evaluating Socioecological Wildfire Effects in Greece with a Novel Numerical Index

Abstract: Large-scale wildfires have become more frequent in Greece and coupled with the country’s limited economic resources, investments in both pre-fire planning and post-fire rehabilitation for most affected areas are not feasible. From the perspective of forest and fire management agencies, the severity and importance of fire effects are evaluated based only on total area burned, while from a societal standpoint, by the number of fatalities and destroyed houses. A holistic approach to rank wildfires with an inclusi… Show more

“…Europe has no unified standard defining fire intensity scales in the WUI (Intini et al 2020); however, individual states (for example Italy and France) have criteria to define WUI fire risks and required mitigation measures. Other jurisdictions, like Greece, have developed a country-specific fire index (Palaiologou et al 2020) that quantifies and ranks the environmental and socioeconomic effects of bush fires; however, this index is defined a posteriori, giving an indication of damage but not a prediction of fire intensity scale that may be used to define construction requirements for timber.…”

“…On the other hand, prescribed fires are applied frequently to landscape restoration, increasing the managed area's aesthetic benefits [61]. Wildfires damage cultural sites as observed in several studies [e.g., 62,63], while controlled prescribed fires can restore the millennial use of fire to landscape management, restoring in a structured manner ecological role. Finally, despite the negative short-term impacts of wildfires, the study of their effects has been critical to understanding the ecosystems vulnerability and resilience to this disturbance.…”

“…Wildfires are one of the main environmental threats that Greece faces. They provoke human casualties, damage private property and critical infrastructure and undermine the financial development of the country [1]. Moreover, wildfires pose a great threat to the ecosystems and the biodiversity of Greece.…”
